San Sebastian

The capital of La Gomera, San Sebastián, is your place of arrival. Most of the tourists travel on to other destinations on the island by bus or taxi. You can stay here, as you have already arrived at your holiday destination.

The small but modern harbour of San Sebastián is the centre of everyday life. While strolling along the promenade, which runs parallel to the harbour and the beach, you will find plenty of cafes and pubs. Here you have the possibility to just observe or to join in the islanders´ lifestyle. In the palm-shaded street cafés you will find at least seven different ways of preparing a coffee. Between the cafés are two playgrounds and a beautiful park with a historical tower. Everything you need is to be found in the little shops and supermarkets along the two main streets that lead off the "plaza". A walk through these streets takes you past a "tapestry" of old and historical buildings, built in traditional Canarian style with green inner courtyards.

As in the rest of Spain people have their "siesta" from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm.

The nightlife

San Sebastian possesses only two disco. Nightlife consists basically of bars. For this reason the "plazas" are the interesting places, bustling with activity as people meet here in the evenings. Weekend is family time. For many families the "plazas" are popular meeting points where children can play and parents can have a chat with friends. On weekends or bank holidays the local town hall occasionally organizes classical concerts in the public concert hall, admission free. And don´t miss the open air concerts taking place throughout the year in the "Plaza de las Américas" , where you can jig to a blend.

The beachlife

During the day a gentle wind accompanies the sunshine and your visit to one of San Sebastián`s exotic black volcanic sand beaches will be even more enjoyable. Swimming is possible almost all the time due to the fact that at least at one of the three beaches the wind doesn´t blow too strongly. The beaches in San Sebastian are considered some of the most secure of the Canary Islands, as huge breakwaters were built in 1999 with the help of "Gomeradivers", in order to preserve the beauty of the black sand beaches.

Thanks to these breakwaters, formed by rocks placed underwater along the coastline, the sea conditions permit even smaller children to bathe in the Atlantic. Here, right at the beach is where the underwater world already begins. Take your flippers, snorkel and diving goggles and start exploring it on your own! At some parts you can observe more living things underwater than in the protected National Park itself.

Going on a boat trip with Gomeradivers to the normally inaccessible beaches, is also a splendid possibility to "go exploring".
